• The Escalation Procedure in a Site (no nurse call system active)

If in “12” images of the last “60” seconds a person is annotated in the pose “Lying on the floor” = FALL

    The Escalation Procedure starts:

    1. The lamp asks if you made a fall:
    ● A clear “NO” → nothing happens
    ● In all other cases:

    2. The Escalation proceeds:
    ● Phone call to the 1st phone number in the escalation procedure
    ● Text message to all the remaining mobile phones
    ● Mail to the contacts/channels with a mail address

    3. The 1st contact answers the phone:
    ● Follows the instructions from the operator and presses “1”
    ● Can talk to the resident in need.

    4. In the application:
    ● Red indicator of the fall in the dashboard
    ● Red indicator button when you click on the resident in the dashboard
    ● In the escalation overview: the ongoing escalation in red, at the top of the list.

    5. Close the Escalation:
    ● In the dashboard: click on the big red escalation button.

    Afbeelding3.png        Afbeelding4.png

    Afbeelding5.png

    ● In the Escalation overview: list of all escalations: the open escalations are indicated in red .
    ● Click on “show” to close the escalation.

    Afbeelding6.png

    Afbeelding5.png

    6. What if the called contact does not answer the call?
    ● If there is only one phone number in the escalation procedure, it will be recalled until the call is taken or the escalation is closed.
    ● If there are several phone numbers in the escalation procedure, the 2nd number is called, no answer: the 3rd is called an so on.
    ● The escalation procedure stays in effect = nobi continues the call the available numbers until someone answers.

    7. What if the call is taken but the resident receives no help?
    ● Is the call taken but the action “Press 1” was not executed, the call remains “Not answered” and it will be called again.
    ● Has the call been taken and “press 1” is executed, but the resident remains without help, the escalation procedures restarts. After 10 to 12 minutes all the registered numbers will be called again.

  • Auto-snooze function

Duration: This quick guide will take about 3 minutes to read through.

What: The auto-snooze feature automatically pauses fall detection when more than one person is detected in the room.

Why: In care settings, it's common for staff to be on the floor, aiding residents with dressing or foot care, inadvertently triggering Nobi's fall detection. To minimize unwanted escalations without compromising safety, auto-snooze kicks in when multiple movements are spotted, ensuring that Nobi only escalates true escalations.

Use case: This feature is especially useful during care routines where staff presence is required on the floor, significantly reducing unnecessary escalations and focusing on actual falls.

    Detailed steps:

Awareness: No manual setup is needed. Auto-snooze activates by itself when more than one person is detected in a room.

Dashboard notification: When auto-snooze is active, the dashboard displays 'Snoozed (>1 person)' to indicate the lamp's current status.

Deactivation: Auto-snooze turns off once the lamp detects fewer than 2 people, resuming normal operation.  If no movement is detected for 15 minutes by one of the people in the room, auto-snooze will deactivate as well.

Exclusions: Auto-snooze is not enabled in multi-resident housing units.

Cautious operation: If Nobi is uncertain about the situation (e.g., it can't clearly detect multiple people), it will not activate auto-snooze, erring on the side of safety.

    Summary

Nobi's auto-snooze feature smartly reduces false alarms during multi-person care activities without needing manual intervention, ensuring that attention is given only to genuine falls.

    What

In Nobi, there are different types of housing units. Nobi offers the choice between a single person unit, a double person unit, and a Jack & Jill unit. For double-person, and Jack & Jill units, we prioritise privacy by applying the most restrictive user privacy, and housing unit settings.

    Why

It is crucial to know what type of housing unit to configure in the app. Certain types have less functionalities than others and are configured differently.

Differentiating the types of housing unit

The illustrations below can help you figure out which type of housing unit you have to configure.

    • Single person room: There is just one person living in this housing unit.
    • Multi person room: Two residents share 1 bed and all other rooms are shared.
    • Semi private room: Two residents share one bedroom in 2 separate beds and all other rooms are shared. If you have this setup, please contact Nobi support to assist you as this has to be configured manually.
    • Jack & Jill: Two residents have their private rooms with a shared bathroom.

Consequences of the different types of housing unit

As Nobi cannot see the difference between multiple stick figures, certain features will not work in multi person rooms. These include bed related monitoring events (resident out of bed, resident on the edge of the bed), sleep reports, night light, and morning greeting.

  • Wizard "a new resident"
  • In-app communication

The new in-app communication feature is designed to inform end users instantly and efficiently about updates and novelties. After reading this article, you'll know how to access this role and how it can help you stay informed.

    What is In-App Communication?

In-app communication is a new role that allows users to receive direct updates and notifications within the application. Users can access a list of communications by clicking the down arrow in the top right corner.

    Why In-App Communications?

This role enriches the user experience by providing an easy and accessible way to receive important information and updates, ensuring users are always aware of the latest developments and news.

How to access the In-app Communication

    • click the down arrow in the top right corner
    • then click on messages

    • you get an overview of all communication
    • click on a subject - all unread messages have a yellow sphere in front of the message

    • you will be redirected to the message.

    • By clicking on close you get back to the overview of messages
    • the yellow sphere in front of the message has disappeared
    • at the top of your profile you will also notice that you have one less unread message

  • Silent escalation

In a silent escalation, help is automatically summoned in the event of a detected fall, without spoken interaction with the resident. This feature is especially designed for residents with cognitive impairments to avoid causing them distress.

In short, the lamp does not speak.

You need to set this with the resident at the housing unit level

    • click on residents

    • click on edit at the end of the resident concerned

    • click on the tab housing units settings.
    • under sound click on No voice
    • Click on save

For double rooms, the resident's most privacy settings that are most restrictive are applied.

    Added Value of Silent Escalation

The silent escalation contributes to a safer environment for residents, particularly those with cognitive impairments, by efficiently detecting fall incidents and swiftly summoning assistance, without direct interaction or questioning. This minimizes fear and confusion for people with cognitive impairments, as interaction with a talking lamp can be overwhelming.

  • Smart monitoring

Our lamp is more than a light source; with residents' permission to share images and or poses, it becomes a smart assistant. Smart roles such as Live view, CheckMate, automatic night lights, and a morning greeting are activated as a result. These increase security and comfort while keeping privacy strictly protected in accordance with GDPR guidelines.

After residents' consent and activation of the smart monitoring, the following applications are possible

    • Live view --> Activate to see an abstract view of the resident when they are in their room but not in bed, visible by clicking on their name in the dashboard.
    • CheckMate --> Activate to have a Nobi expert check the fall escalation of the lamp (anonymized images are shared).
    • Escalation data --> Specify what type of data can be accessed when a fall is detected.
      • No image
      • Image with abstract image of resident (anonymized).
      • Actual image

    • Night light --> Activate this functionality as a fall prevention measure. The light automatically turns on at night when getting out of bed and automatically turns off when returning to bed.
      • only works if the smart roles are activated for a single room
      • never works on a double room
    • Greeting --> Activate to receive morning updates from the Nobi lamp (date, temperature...) so the resident can get used to the voice of the Nobi device.
      • only works if the smart roles are activated for a single room
      • never works on a double room
    • Sound
      • Activate the voice of the Nobi device when a fall is detected
        • No voice (recommended for residents with cognitive impairments)
        • Ask for fall confirmation, confirm calling for help (default)
      • when dealing with a resident in a double room, the resident settings that are most restrictive will be applied

For a one-person unit, the privacy settings of the paired resident will apply

For a two-person unit, the privacy policy of the resident that is most restrictive will be applied

    4. Jack & Jill: Two residents have their private rooms with one or more shared rooms.
    5. Common area: A unit which is not linked to an individual resident.

Consequences of the different types of housing unit

    Bed related features
As Nobi cannot see the difference between multiple stick figures, certain features will not work in multi person rooms. These include bed related monitoring events (resident out of bed, resident on the edge of the bed), sleep reports, night light, and morning greeting.

    Privacy
If two people share (part of) a unit, automatically, the shared parts will follow the privacy settings of the resident with the most restrictive settings. This is because Nobi cannot distinguish between different residents within the same space. For common areas, there is no resident linked and here the following privacy settings will automatically apply: no live view, no escalation images. Lastly, the voice confirmation for an escalation will automatically be active.

  • Notification escalation channel

We added a new channel for escalations.  Previously it was only possible to escalate through:

    • E-mail
    • Phone (both mobile as well as landline)
    • A Nurse call system

We added App notification as an additional channel.

This means it is now possible to add this based on a user-level:

When selecting App Notification, you will be prompted to link this to a user.

After adding a user, their name will appear in the App Notification section.

In the column Active devices you can see the number of devices where the user has logged in and accepted notifications.  It is the user themselves who needs to allow notifications on their device (smartphone/tablet).  When the user logs out on the device, you will see the number go down since no notifications will be sent.

When an external nurse call system is linked, App notifications and emails will still be sent out.  Phone numbers will only be called if Nobi is unsuccessful in delivering the escalation to the partner integration.  Additionally, we will now display a warning.

  • Privacy settings

The images captured by the Nobi lamp can be set at three levels of privacy:

    1. Don't show anything: No images of "the fall" are saved, and the staff cannot access any images.

    2. Show abstract vieuw: The staff can view images of the fall where you are not recognizable as a person but only as a stick figure.

    abstracte weergave.jpg

    • Show images: The staff can access to the images of the fall where you are recognizable as a person.

There are two parts of the app where images can or cannot be displayed:

    • Timeline: This is what you see when you click on the name of one of the residents on the dashboard. These are recent images of individuals taken in the room. If the resident has chosen not to display images, nothing will be visible. Also, if the resident is not in the room or is in bed, there will be no images to see.

    2023-10-13 13_13_23-Nobi.png

During an escalation: when a fall occurs, you can view images in the confirmation screen, and even after a fall, you can still access the images for 14 days in the "Escalations" section. After this period, the images will be automatically deleted.

    2023-10-13 13_37_30-Nobi.png

The resident determines the privacy level. You can configure this by clicking on 'Residents' and then selecting 'Edit' next to the resident for whom you wish to modify the privacy settings.

    2023-10-13 14_02_13-Nobi.png

You can customize the privacy settings independently for both the timeline and images during an escalation.

It is possible to hide images in the timeline but show them during an escalation.

It is not possible to show images in the timeline and hide them during an escalation.

    2023-10-16 14_42_37-Nobi.png

When you click on 'changelog,' you will see a history of the users who have changed the privacy settings and at what time.

  • How to make a escalation procedure for a family account

To create an escalation procedure in a family-account, click on Configuration and then on Users.

In the list of added users (see the article 'How to Add a User in a Family-Account'), you can rearrange the users by clicking on the dots to the left of the user and dragging the user up or down.

The order of these users determines who will be contacted first in the event of a fall. Users can add their phone numbers to their profiles so they can receive a call and an SMS notification when a fall occurs and when the fall is cleared.

What is the Circadian Rhythm for the Nobi Lamp ?

Switching the Nobi Light ON and OFF Automatically

  • What is the Circadian Rhythm for the Nobi Lamp ?

What is a circadian rhythm in general?

    • Circadian rhythm refers to the internal biological process that regulates various physical, mental, and behavioural changes in our body.
    • This internal “body clock” has a 24-hour cycle.
    • It helps us to maintain a regular sleep-wake cycle, hunger and thirst cycles.
    • Influences physiological processes such as: body temperature, hormone production, and metabolism.
    • Our circadian rhythm is largely influenced by environmental cues such as light and darkness.
    • Can be disrupted by factors like shift work, jet lag, and certain medical conditions.

    Afbeelding2.png

The Circadian Rhythm in the Nobi lamp:

    • Nobi follows the cycle of natural daylight: using variations in light intensity and color temperature.
    • The light intensity increases gradually as the morning progresses.
    • Around noon, when the sun reaches it’s zenith, the light intensity is at its brightest.
    • The light intensity decreases gradually as the afternoon progresses to the evening.
    • This can provide assistance to the internal body clock of people who spend the day almost entirely indoors.

The personal settings for the Nobi lamp: Light intensity:

    • Can influence the circadian rhythm of Nobi.
    • Light intensity set on 80% or less will safeguard the circadian rhythm.
    • If the brightness is set above 80 to 100%, a great part of the circadian rhythm is lost.
    • Above 100% you lose all the benefits of the circadian rhythm.

The personal settings for the Nobi lamp: Color temperature:

    • Natural light consists of variations in cold white light and warm white light.
    • The difference between the 2 lies in the color temperature.
    • The lower the color temperature is, the more yellow the light is, the warmer the color of the light is.
    • The higher the color temperature is, the whiter the light is, the colder the color of the light is.
    • Cold white light has a lot of blue components in it = slows down/stops the melatonin production (induces sleep) = keeps us alert – active.
    • Warm white light has hardly any blue components in it = no influence on melatonin production = helps to relax – calm down.

What can we learn from the data in the overview?

    Lets discuss a few examples.

    1. The trigger “Resident is out of bed”

    • The trigger "resident is out of bed" stays "ongoing" in the overview of monitoring events until the resident returns to his bed.
    • If you filter "closed" and "resident is out of bed", you get an overview of how long the residents was out of bed.
    • E.g. Mr X had not a lot of sleep lately…

    2. The trigger “Resident sits on bed”

    • The trigger "resident sits on bed" stays ongoing in the review of monitoring events until the resident goes back to bed or steps completely out of his bed.
    • If you filter in the overview "closed and "residents sits on bed" you get an overview of how long resident was on the bedside.
    • E.g. Mr X maybe suffering from his knee arthritis, takes longer and longer to stand up…

    3. The trigger “No resident detected”

    • The trigger "no resident detected" stays ongoing in the overview until the resident returns back to his housing unit.
    • By filtering "closed" and "no resident detected" you get an overview for how long the resident was out of his housing units.
    • E.g. Mr X hardily leaves his room lately, suffering from a new condition? Need to investigate this…

    4. The trigger “Resident in bathroom” or toilet

    • The trigger "Resident in bathroom or toilet” stays ongoing until the resident has left the bathroom or toilet.
    • By filtering "closed" and "resident in bathroom or toilet" in the overview, you can check on how long residents stayed in their bathroom or toilet.
    • E.g. Mr X stays only for a short period of time in the bathroom each day, needs help to wash/with clothing?

  • Monitoring Events: What is it + How does it work ?

Monitoring Events will generate a notification on your smartphone and/or a resident dashboard icon when certain situations/events occur.

    1. There are 4 different monitoring events available:

    • Resident is sitting on bed: alerts you when a resident is sitting on the side of his bed.
    • Resident in bathroom or toilet: alerts you when a resident is in his bathroom or toilet. Here for you need to have a Nobita lamp active in the room.
    • No resident detected: alerts you when a resident has left the housing unit. Here for the housing unit needs to have full coverage of Nobi lamps.
    • Resident is out of bed: alerts you when a resident is completely out of bed.

    2. Each of these monitoring events can be activated = configured to alert you:

    • When the event occurs.
    • Immediately or after a certain time span (threshold).
    • Only on certain pre-set days.
    • Between certain hours.

    3. You can activate the monitoring events on 3 levels:

    • Site level: applies to ALL the residents in the Site.
    • Department level: applies only to the residents in the specific department.
    • Resident level : applies only for that specific resident.

    4. The monitoring events are always consultable in “Monitoring Events” overview:

    • List of all the ongoing and closed monitoring events.
    • Filters available: resident, department, ongoing, closed, type of event,…

    5. The way the alert is presented has 2 options:

    • Pictogram/icon in the resident’s dashboard. (ex. No resident detected/ Resident is out of bed)

    Afbeelding7.png                Afbeelding8.png

    • Notification on your smartphone. (e.g. No resident detected/Resident is out of bed)

  • What is a Stick Figure ? (in the Nobi application)
    • Abstract display of a person
    • The real person is presented by a display of several lines.
    • This computer model is processed by Nobi.
    • About 18 points on the person’s body are connected through lines.

    • Used for privacy reasons.

  • What is a False Positive Escalation ?

Nobi interprets images with the pose “lying on the floor” as a legitimate  “FALL” when it is not the case:

    • Resident kneels down with a purpose (looking for something under the bed, his slippers,…)
    • Resident has visitors (pedicure, family, an animal,…)
    • Caretaker kneels down to help the resident with: putting bindings on, washing legs and feet, ….
    • Blanket and clothing are lying on the floor or chair with the “posture of a human”.

Can we do something about it ?

False positive escalations will always occur, but:

    • Nobi can learn from false positive escalations
    • Making small changes in the room can sometimes make a big difference (lay-out, furniture position, changing an angle of a chair,....
    • Snoozing the escalation is an option to consider when the resident has visitors.

E.g. resident searching under the bed for her shoes.

    Afbeelding1.png

E.g. Caretaker puts the residents bindings on.

    Afbeelding2.png

E.g. clothing (a coat) left on a chair.

  • How to add an Escalation Procedure?

In the Nobi Dashboard it is really visible when there is no escalation procedure active for a resident. It is marked in red in the residents compartment.

The red notification stays in place as long as there is no escalation procedure active on one of the 3 levels.

    Afbeelding1.png

In the Nobi application you can add an escalation procedure on 3 levels:

    • Site: valid for ALL  the residents in the Site.
    • Department: valid for all the residents in that department.
    • Housing unit: only valid for the resident connected to this housing unit.

First choose the level you want to add the escalation procedure. Within a site it usually is the department level.

    • Click in the Nobi Menu on “Departments”.
    • Click on the “Edit” button at the end of the department of your choice

    Afbeelding3.png

    • Install an escalation procedure by adding contacts  = channels.
    • Is the “channel” an identified user in the Nobi application, you use preferably the drop down you find when clicking on “User”. The data of the chosen user get synchronized with the data of the channel in the escalation procedure.

    Afbeelding3.png

    Afbeelding4.png

    • Is the contact/channel not a user of the Nobi application or a phone number of a department: fill out the details manually.

    • Channel: the way to make contact: mobile phone, landline, email.
    • Name: name you give the contact/channel: Department 3, Care Staff,…
    • Value: fill out the phone number, email account according to the choice made in channel.
    • Use the “Add” button to put the channel in the escalation procedure.
    • If you add an email account, it is put in an additional list only for emailing. These channels will receive only an email in case of escalation of a fall.
    • The added phone number is put in a separate list underneath the mailing list.
    • If more than one phone number is added , you can adjust the ranking by using the little icon in front of the channel: drag and drop the contact in the position you want it to be.

    Afbeelding6.png

    • Removing a channel/contact is done by using the dustbin at the back of the channel.
    • If the escalation procedure needs to be removed entirely, you can ONLY do this with the “Erase configuration” button.
