In this article, you will learn how to set up a Common Area housing unit configured for Gateways, so you can then add and pair Gateways to it.

What
A Common Area is a type of housing unit that isn't linked to a specific resident. It lets you set up Nobi devices in shared spaces, such as hallways or lounges, without assigning them to an individual resident.
A Gateway can only be paired to a housing unit configured for Gateways. This is set via the Device setup option when the housing unit is created. A housing unit like this can have multiple Areas, the same way a housing unit set up for lights can have multiple rooms. Each Area can have one Gateway device onboarded.
Why
Setting up a dedicated Common Area housing unit for Gateways lets you organize and manage Gateways in shared spaces separately from housing units with Nobi lights. This step is required before you can add and pair any Gateway.
Choosing Gateways as the Device setup also determines the type of Nobi coverage that a housing unit will have. Unlike a Nobi light, a Gateway doesn't include fall detection, image or video capture, pose analysis, or two-way audio. A housing unit set up for Gateways only supports Assistance Call and Wearable Call escalations, not the smart monitoring features available on a Nobi light.
Detailed steps
- Navigate to the Housing Units page.
- Press the + button to add a new housing unit.
- Select Common Area from the Housing unit type dropdown.
- Select Gateways from the Device setup dropdown.
Please note: this dropdown defaults to Nobi lights, so be sure to change it to Gateways. Otherwise, the housing unit won't be set up to pair a Gateway. - Name the housing unit, for example "Main hallway".
- Optionally, select an icon to represent the housing unit.
- Select the Department the housing unit belongs to from the dropdown.
- Optionally, set up the housing unit's WIFI settings, if they are different from the Department level.
- Press Save.
- You have now created a Common Area housing unit configured for Gateways.
