How to Install Nobi Gateway

This article covers the physical installation of the Nobi Gateway, so it's ready for onboarding.

What

The Nobi Gateway is a Nobi device installed in common areas that don't have a Nobi light. It receives and sends escalation signals from badges and resident wearable call buttons, so assistance calls and resident calls can be escalated even when a Nobi light isn't nearby. Before it can be onboarded, it needs to be unboxed and prepared for setup. It can also be mounted to a wall, if needed.

Nobi recommends installing the gateway with a powered ethernet (POE) cable, which supplies both power and internet through a single cable.

If more than one gateway is needed in the same area, a second gateway can be powered and connected from the first. This is called daisy chaining, and the steps are at the end of this article.

Why

Before a Nobi Gateway can be onboarded, it must have the antenna attached and have access to electricity and internet. 

Before You Start

Before getting started, make sure you have the following:

• Mounting guide (small square white paper with two drill-hole markings, included with your Nobi Gateway)
• Nobi Gateway
• Gateway antenna (included with your Nobi Gateway)
• Micro-USB power cable (included with your Nobi Gateway)
• Access to power
• Access to internet (via ethernet cable or WIFI)
• Wall screws and screwdriver/drill (if mounting to the wall via screws)

• Additional ethernet cables, if you are daisy chaining multiple Nobi Gateways

Detailed steps

Follow the steps below to install a Nobi Gateway

1. Position the mounting guide against the wall where the gateway will sit, and mark the two drill points (only if you're affixing the gateway to a wall, otherwise skip to the next step). 
2. Using the mounting guide, insert the wall screws at the marked points.
3. Attach the antenna by screwing it onto the connector on the same edge as the micro-USB and POE ports. 
   
4. Mount the gateway on the wall screws (or place it on a stable surface in a safe place).
   
5. Connect the gateway to power and internet. Setting up the gateway requires both. Choose which cables you use depending on your network connection type:
   • Powered ethernet (POE) cable: Insert the ethernet cable into the POE in port. This single cable supplies both power and internet, so no micro-USB cable is needed. Use this when your ethernet cable is also capable of supplying power to the gateway.
     
   • WIFI: Connect the micro-USB cable for power. The gateway connects to the internet over WIFI, so no ethernet cable is needed. Use this when the internet will be configured via WIFI and power will be supplied using the provided micro-USB power cable.
     
6. Check the LED: it will blink blue and green once the gateway is ready for onboarding.

Follow the steps below to daisy chain Nobi Gateways

1. Install and connect the first Nobi Gateway using the steps above, using a powered ethernet cable.
2. Attach the antenna to the next Nobi Gateway and mount it, following steps 1 to 4 above.
3. Connect an ethernet cable from the POE out port on the already installed Nobi Gateway.
   
4. Connect the other end of the cable to the POE in port on the gateway you are adding.
   
5. Check the LED. It will blink blue and green once the gateway is ready to onboard.
6. Repeat the steps above for each additional Nobi Gateway you wish to daisy chain.

If the LED isn't blinking blue and green, check the power connection and, for ethernet setups, confirm the cable is fully inserted into the POE in port and, if daisy chained, into the POE out port on the gateway before it.

Now you are ready to set up a common area housing unit for gateways and onboard the Nobi Gateway.
